Melbourne’s South Sudanese community is fed up with being ‘‘demonised’’ by ‘‘racist’’ media coverage and political commentary about youth crime.
Community leader and lawyer Maker Mayek and a group of suburban mayors say the ‘‘racist fearmongering must be stopped’’ following the high-profile coverage of police incidents involving African-Australian youths.
Some politicians and commentators, including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton have blamed ‘‘African gangs’’ for the incidents but Mr Mayek says his community is being ‘‘demonised’’ in the lead up to the November 24 state election
He said Monday’s meeting showed politicians that communities were uniting against the “frenzy of sensationalist reporting that is hurting African-Australian people and their communities”.
Mr Mayek said the media had exaggerated crime in his community.
